Meet our Guest Speaker

Barbara "Jean" Kelly

Barbara “Jean” Kelly’s journey began in Biloela Hospital in 1972, as the youngest child of Doug and Barb Staines. Growing up with three brothers and a sister, Jean’s early education was at Moura State School before she became a boarder at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School (RGGS) for her secondary years. She pursued her passion for nursing at the University of New England, Lismore campus, earning a Bachelor of Nursing.

Jean's career commenced at Rockhampton Base Hospital, where she worked across various departments including medical, surgical, severely disabled, and paediatrics. It was here that she discovered her true calling in Orthopaedic nursing. In 1992, Jean met Warrick, her future husband, and after spending several months in Canada in 1994, they returned to Rockhampton engaged and ready for new adventures.

Her professional journey took a significant turn in 1997 when she joined Cooroy Private Hospital as an orthopaedic specialist nurse. Jean's path led her to meet an oncologist and start a chemotherapy unit, igniting a deep passion for cancer nursing. Her dedication was evident as she competed in the Queensland Nurse of the Year fundraiser for the Queensland Cancer Council. Following the closure of Cooroy Hospital, Jean continued her mission, working in a boutique chemotherapy unit, palliative care, and as a practice nurse for an oncologist.

Between 2002 and 2006, Jean welcomed three wonderful children: Patrick (22), Elizabeth (19), and Andy (17). She then embraced a new role at Noosa Hospital in a surgical unit. Realizing the critical need for support for women with breast cancer, Jean was awarded a scholarship to study Breast Care Nursing at the NSW College of Nursing, which she completed in 2018.

Jean’s dedication to supporting breast cancer patients faced challenges, but her resolve never wavered. In 2023, she made a courageous decision to leave Ramsay and join Dr. Felicity Adams and her team. This leap of faith allowed her to expand the Breast Care Nurse (BCN) role, tailoring it to meet the unique needs of each patient.

Today, Jean stands proud of her role, fulfilling her dream of providing unwavering support to her patients. She ensures that anyone feeling lost, overwhelmed, or in need of guidance has a direct line to someone who cares deeply about their journey. Jean's story is a testament to her unwavering commitment, compassion, and the belief that with dedication and heart, we can make a profound difference in the lives of others.
