Annual Rotary quiz

May 23, 2018 at 12:26 pm

Last night our senior team of Jayme McKellar, Chloe Cowan and Aleisha Cesar participated in the annual Rotary Quiz. Although our girls were in grade 10 and went up against students in grade 12 from other schools in the region, they answered questions well and with much confidence. Our clever, confident and connected RGGS senior team made it through to the semi-finals and only narrowly missed out on a grand final position. A huge congratulations must go to these three girls for their tremendous efforts.

On Monday night, our junior team of Jordan Austin, Mia Pienaar and Mirae Ries also participated and, for their first ever participation at the Rotary Quiz, gave it a great attempt.

Legal Studies Excursion

May 22, 2018 at 8:51 am

On Monday the 14 May, members of the Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies class attended the Rockhampton Magistrates Court. The day provided insight into legal proceedings and formalities, including the viewing of live cases. In the magistrate’s court, students witnessed several cases including DUIs, thefts, DVOs and drug offences.

After an extended session viewing trials, we proceeded to the Dispute Resolution Centre, where students investigated the benefits of settling civil matters without initiating legal action. From there, we engaged in a tour of the old supreme court and library facilities.

Overall it was a fantastic experience, providing real world perspective to the legal system.

Relay for Life

May 21, 2018 at 4:26 pm

This weekend, the 19th and 20th May, 17 students from the RGGS Year 12 cohort participated in the annual Cancer Council’s Relay for Life. Relay for Life is a fun and moving overnight experience that raises vital funds for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention, information and support services. Relay is a chance for the Rockhampton community to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients and their carers, to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer and to raise money to help save more lives.

Our confident and connected participating students from Year 12 persevered through the cold conditions of the weekend, continually walking laps of the CQU oval in the name of cancer research. We raised an astonishing $3,200 and were the second highest youth team in the region for fundraising.

A huge thank you must go to all the students, parents and teachers for their tireless efforts for the event. Mr Edwards and Mrs Whitehand were on hand to supervise the girls all through the night.

Debating

May 15, 2018 at 12:13 pm

Earlier this month, our debating teams went up against Heights College. Our senior topic was that ‘Jobs should be contracted to developing nations’. Taking the affirmative side, the RGGS seniors spoke with great passion and persuasion to defeat the Heights College team in a thrilling debate. The arguments ebbed and flowed and our phenomenal debaters, Kailee Butcher, Taylor Busbridge and Brianna Austin left the audience in no doubt that jobs must be contracted to developing nations. These girls are undefeated in the competition and as per the adjudicators comments are a “force to be reckoned with.”

Our junior team were very narrowly defeated, in the thinnest of margins. A huge congratulations must go to Jordan Austin, Mia Pienaar and Madison Usher who put up a great debate. Their topic was that ‘Sport is not sport anymore’.

The next debate will be held here in the RGGS Museum on May 22 and will see our junior and senior teams take on Emmaus College. All are welcome to come and support our amazing debaters.
