Foster Care Allowance changes for High School students

March 8, 2019 at 2:31 pm

With the changes to prep entry ages in 2007, an increased number of young people now finish year 12 after they turn 18. In response, the policy and procedure for the Foster Carer Allowance and Interstate Foster Payments (No: 365-12) has been amended to reflect that Foster Carers, Long-Term Guardians and Permanent Guardians who have a young person in their care who is turning 18 and still enrolled in school will continue to receive the Foster Care Allowance.

There’s also a further change, from mid-2020, which will be very important to carers and children: eligibility to receive the fortnightly caring allowance will increase to provide support to young people up to 19 years of age.

These changes will mean that children and young people will have certainty that if they reach adulthood while still at school, they will be supported to complete their schooling.

Yours sincerely
