Humanities is alive at RGGS!

Term 4 is always a very busy one at RGGS and the Humanities department is no exception. Our very clever girls finished off the year with some very exciting units of work across the Social Sciences. These units of work reflect that of an ever changing and contemporary world, focussing mainly on events and institutions that impact on everyday lives. Students studied:

  • Year 7 – Civics and Citizenship – Australian Parliament and Democratic Processes
  • Year 8 – Civics and Citizenship – Australian Identity
  • Year 9 – History – World War I
  • Year 10 – Civics and Citizenship – Climate Change and the United Nations response
  • Year 11 / 12 Modern History – Imperialism
  • Year 11 / 12 Ancient History – Greek Philosophers

2018 has been a very successful year within the Humanities faculty. With leading edge teaching and learning practices, our students have acquired knowledge vital to their membership of Australian society.

We are very much looking forward to an even more successful 2019!

Term Overview – Humanities

This term, in the Humanities faculty, has been one full of achievement and progress. Girls across all year levels have been well immersed in a wide variety of learning strategies to further engage in their exciting units of History and Geography. Students have been excitedly engaged in the following units of work, which have allowed them to investigate the past and explore how geography plays an important role in understanding the modern world:

  • Year 7 HSS – History: Ancient China

  • Year 8 HSS – History: Japan Under the Shogun

  • Year 9 HSS – History: World War I

  • Year 10 HSS – Geography: Geographies of Human Wellbeing

  • Year 11 and 12 Modern History – Arab-Israeli Conflict

  • Year 11 and 12 Ancient History – Pharaonic Power in Ancient Egypt

Girls have shown great interest and intrigue in these topics and it has been great to see such a high interest in the studies of the past and present. Within these units of work, the Humanities teaching team have also implemented strategies designed by the Collins Institute. Following a very successful implementation in Semester One of well-researched strategies, students in all grades have been practicing these in their classrooms and achievement of knowledge retention linking to results is evident. This strategy is very well suited to the Humanities classroom and can be used to summarise key documents of information and will be used for lengthy research tasks, without students being intimidated by dreaded plagiarism.

Students have had a good term in Humanities and the teaching team are very excited for another productive and successful Term Four.

  • Year 8 HSS – History: Medieval Europe and the Black Death
  • Year 9 HSS – History: Making a Nation
  • Year 10 HSS – History: Rights and Freedoms
  • Year 11 and 12 Modern History – Australian Nationalism
  • Year 11 and 12 Ancient History – Greek and Egyptian Funerary Practices

Girls have shown great interest and intrigue in these topics and it has been great see such a high interest in the studies of the past and present. Glenmore Challenge Cup Success

A small group of students from Year 4 – 6 travelled to Glenmore High school to compete in the annual Glenmore Challenge Cup. This year saw students participate in a full day of Dance, History, English and STEM tasks. Taylah Brown, Mikayla Cheers and Jorja Hoare made up the first STEM team with Paige Ung, Clare Hills and Georgia Brennan the second team. The students had to make a game using the Scratch program which was played and reviewed by their peers. RGGS won the History, thanks to Lydia Johnstone, Paige Donaldson and Matilda Peff who were compared to Year 11 students regarding their ability to critically reflect, compare and contrast ‘poo’ samples. We were also victorious in the English Competition thanks to the incredible writing skills of Bethany Dey, Cadence Won De Rungs and Georgia Priddle. The students were acknowledged for their persuasive letter to the editor on behalf of Papa Smurf with a pollution issue from ‘The Lorax’. Dance students, Lara Bryson, Breanna Baker and Tilly Hungerford were surprised and elated when they received first place for their routine involving teacher and student choreography. No nerves were displayed when they performed this routine in front of all participants, teachers and parents to end the day. With three sections won by RGGS and two spirit tokens, we waited excitedly for the results. RGGS walked away with the overall trophy for the second year in a row. Congratulations girls!

Humanities Term Report

Girls across all Year levels have been well immersed in a wide variety of learning strategies to further engage in their exciting units of History and Geography. Students have been excitedly engaged in the following units of work, which have allowed them to investigate the past and explore how geography plays an important role in understanding the modern world:

  • Year 7 HSS – Investigating the ancient past: Ancient Rome
  • Year 8 HSS – Geography: Changing Nations
  • Year 9 HSS – History: The movement of people
  • Year 10 HSS – History: World War II
  • Year 11 and 12 Modern History – Competing Ideologies and the Russian Revolution
  • Year 11 and 12 Ancient History – Archaeology and the Trojan War

Girls have shown great interest and intrigue in these topics and it has been great to see such a high interest in the studies of the past and present. Within these units of work, the Humanities teaching team have also implemented strategies designed by the Collins Institute. Following a visit and practical classroom sessions from the Collins Institute at the beginning of the term, the team realised the opportunities presented by the 10% Summary. Students in all Year levels have been practicing this strategy in their classrooms and achievement of knowledge retention, linking to results is evident. This strategy is very well suited to the Humanities classroom and can be used to summarise key documents of information and will be used for lengthy research tasks without students being intimidated by dreaded plagiarism.

Students have had a good Term 1 in Humanities and the teaching team are very excited for a productive and successful Term 2.

Rockhampton North Rotary Club Secondary Schools Quiz

On Tuesday 16 May, Lucy Davison, Jessica Gunning and Meredith Fay competed in the annual Rockhampton North Rotary Club’s Secondary Schools Quiz. The quiz comprises of two rounds and a final that test basic knowledge on topics such as Sport, History, Geography, English, Maths, Science, Famous Australians, local knowledge and literature. After drawing the short straw and having to compete first, the girls showed great skill and knowledge in the first round, taking on some extremely difficult questions. They also performed exceptionally against Rockhampton State High School in the ‘beat the buzzer’ round. Unfortunately, the girls just missed out on the final round, but should be very proud of their efforts. Thanks must go to Mr Edwards and Ms Bedward for accompanying the girls to the event.

Glenmore Challenge Cup

Glenmore Challenge CupAs the RGGS Glenmore Challenge Cup team walked towards the Mike Maher Centre, they couldn’t stop a smile creeping across their faces. Our girls were sent to meet their teachers and off to their challenges they went! All the students learnt some more things about their subject (Literacy, Mathematics, History, Science and Dance) and then we were introduced to our challenges and what we had to do.

At morning tea, we ate a selection of scrumptious sandwiches, delicious brownies, coconut slice and cookies!

After morning tea, the history girls had to dissect fake poo to find out and make observations on which civilisation it came from. The science girls had to make a rover that would further explore a planet/moon in our solar system. English girls made a poem about food and a persuasive text on the ‘Lorax’. The Mathematics team had to solve a series of problems such as tangrams, equations and word problems. Our dancers learnt new skills and had to choreograph a dance routine which would be judged.

At lunch, there was a sausage sizzle and some time to play. After a final session completing the challenges, it was time for the results. Which school would take out the spirit award and which would be overall winners?

We were initially told which schools won each section. The Science team came 1st, History and Dance 3rd and the English team took out equal second. There was suspense in the crowd. Who would win? Then it was announced, Rockhampton Girls Grammar School had won! All our amazing work led to the overall winners which we were all proud of!

Central Queensland Military Museum Excursion – November 2016

On Tuesday 15 November, 21 YCQ Military Museum CQ Military Museum 1ear 9 students and Mrs Whitehand had the opportunity to tour the Central Queensland Military Museum. That term in Year 9 HSS World War 1 was studied, so the tour was an excellent opportunity to develop the understanding of the topic for each student. Everyone was fortunate enough to look at life in the trenches, uniforms, maps and plans; as well as information on the famous light horse throughout World War 1. World War 2 was also a topic the students and Mrs Whitehand were fortunate to learn about and get a head start for Year 10 HSS this year. The tour gave every student more depth  to their understanding of World War 1 and more knowledge was gained.
