As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School, we wish to address a growing concern in many schools across the country - the use and possession of vapes among young people. This is a critical issue that requires the cooperation of both the school community and families to manage effectively.
It is important for parents and students to be aware of the legal implications associated with vapes. Under Queensland law, it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to possess, purchase, or use vaping products, including e-cigarettes, nicotine liquids, or any related implements. Possession of these items by a minor can lead to serious legal consequences, including fines. At Rockhampton Girls Grammar School, we take these legalities seriously and are committed to enforcing them to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
Vaping is often mistakenly viewed as a safer alternative to smoking. However, research has shown that vaping poses significant health risks, particularly for young people whose bodies and brains are still developing. Some of the risks include:
Nicotine Addiction: Vapes often contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm brain development in adolescents.
Respiratory Issues: Vaping can cause lung damage, leading to respiratory problems and increasing the risk of lung infections.
Cardiovascular Risks: The chemicals in vapes can also increase heart rate and blood pressure, potentially leading to long-term heart problems.
Exposure to Harmful Substances: Many vaping products contain harmful chemicals, including those used in antifreeze and toxic metals that can be inhaled into the lungs.
Rockhampton Girls Grammar School has a strict zero-tolerance policy when it comes to the use or possession of vapes, alcohol, tobacco, and other illicit drugs. This policy is in place to protect the health and safety of all students and to maintain a positive learning environment. Any student found in possession of or using vapes on school grounds or at school-related events will face disciplinary action in accordance with our Alcohol, Nicotine Products, and Illicit Drugs Policy. This may include suspension or cancellation of enrolment.
To support our efforts in keeping the school environment safe and healthy, we ask that parents and caregivers take the following steps:
Read and Understand the Policy: Please ensure that you are familiar with the school’s Alcohol, Nicotine Products, and Illicit Drugs Policy. It is equally important that your child reads and understands this policy.
Prevent Possession and Use: Make every effort to ensure that your child does not use, possess, sell, or distribute alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs, vapes, or related implements at school or during school-related events.
Communicate with Your Child: Have open and honest conversations with your child about the dangers of vaping and the legal and health consequences associated with it.
Together, we can work to keep our school community safe and support the health and well-being of all our students.
