The CQ Rugby 7s Carnival at St Brendan’s College on Saturday was full of thrilling breakaways and hard-hitting tackles. Girls Grammar was proudly represented in the 15-years girls division by a well-balanced team, blending experience, speed, and skill with an eager group of new players getting their first taste of rugby.
After overcoming some early nerves and landing their first tackles, the new players began to embrace the contact, showing great determination. Vivian stood out as a powerhouse, consistently gaining ground and bulldozing through the opposition. Meanwhile, Grace, Rudora and Helena were tireless in defence, repeatedly stopping opponents with solid tackles. Miley and McKayla impressed at the breakdown, regularly pilfering the ball to regain possession for the team. In her debut carnival, Ava showcased her versatility, making impressive tackles and using her touch football background to create space and exploit overlaps.
A standout moment came from Jade, who made a spectacular intercept, running the entire length of the field to score, with the whole bench on their feet cheering her on as defenders chased in vain. However, the player of the day undoubtedly goes to Sophia, whose blistering speed made her a constant threat. She spent the day either scoring long-range tries or chasing down opponents in defence.
While the girls displayed remarkable teamwork, grit, and skill, the day didn’t go their way. Congratulations to Chanel College for taking out the division title.
In the 13-years division, Girls Grammar was also represented by Sophie, Ella, and Molly, who joined the Chanel College team. The trio made a fantastic contribution to help Chanel finish third. Ella was a tackling machine, making her presence felt on defence and frequently winning back possession. Molly took advantage of open space with her speed, while Sophie showed great leadership on the field, organising the team and providing essential support both in attack and defence.
A huge thank you goes to Dale, Kate, and Tahlya for their invaluable support with water running and assistant coaching duties throughout the day.
Congratulations to all the players on a tremendous effort. We look forward to seeing Rugby 7s return with development sessions starting in Term 1, ahead of the Interschool Competition. We encourage even more players to join the program so we can field teams in all three divisions next year!
The Primary CQ7s carnival took place at Colts Field on Thursday, 10 October, where Girls Grammar was proudly represented by three talented club rugby players: Ava, Indee, and Tiffany. QLD Rugby organised the event with combined school teams, forming the Warriors and Barbarians. Ava competed in the U12 division for the Barbarians, while Indee and Tiffany played for the Warriors in the U10 division.
The carnival showcased impressive junior talent, and our Girls Grammar athletes stood out with their exceptional speed and ball skills, leading their teams to strong performances. A special congratulations to Tiffany and Indee, who played pivotal roles in securing the U10 division win for their team. With these rising stars coming through the ranks, the future of rugby at Girls Grammar looks incredibly bright.
