I’ve always considered myself someone who thrives on adventure, exploration, and pushing boundaries. Raised by parents who instilled the belief that I could accomplish anything; I’ve always been encouraged to face my fears head-on and to live life to its fullest. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in shaping who I am today, and it’s because of them that I felt empowered to take the leap and pursue a gap year abroad.
Taking this year off wasn’t born out of uncertainty or lack of direction, but from a deep desire for personal growth. After years of structured education, I needed a change of pace. Rather than jumping straight into the next academic or professional phase, I wanted the freedom to explore my passions, develop new skills, and learn from the world in ways that textbooks can’t teach. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel like I need to keep moving forward without pausing to check in with myself. This gap year is my chance to slow down, reset, and focus on both my personal and professional growth.
My parents have always been my biggest supporters. Their belief in me has been the foundation for many of the bold decisions I’ve made, including this one. Knowing they had my back gave me the confidence to embark on this adventure, even though it meant being far away from home. I’m forever grateful for their guidance and encouragement, as it’s allowed me to chase my dreams without hesitation.
Four weeks into my gap year, I’ve settled into Rockhampton, Australia, and I’m starting to adjust to the change. The heat is intense, and I’m still getting used to the warm weather, but I’m falling in love with the small-town feel here. The people are incredibly friendly and have made me feel so welcome, which has made settling in a lot easier. Rockhampton has been the perfect place to begin this journey, and I’m excited for the experiences ahead.
During this year, I have two main goals. The first is to gain clarity on my career path and personal aspirations. By engaging in diverse experiences and taking on new challenges, I hope to refine my interests and figure out what truly drives me, whether that’s through further education, starting a new project, or entering the workforce. The second goal is centered around self-discovery and balance. I want to cultivate a healthier work-life balance, learning to manage my time effectively while prioritising my mental and physical well-being. This gap year is an opportunity to explore passions, refine goals, and come out of it stronger and more focused on my future.
I’m incredibly thankful to be working with Rockhampton Girls Grammar School, which has played an integral role in this journey. Being part of their exceptional boarding team has been a privilege, and I carry the lessons and values I learn every day with me as I continue navigating this year of personal growth. It’s a unique opportunity to grow both professionally and personally, and I’m excited to see where it will take me.
As I move forward in this gap year, I look forward to continuing my journey of self-discovery and growth. I’m excited to embrace new opportunities, challenge myself, and come out of this year more focused and prepared for the future.
