Engaging Minds: English and HASS Adventures This Term

English

This term, the primary school provided diverse English learning experiences. Prep students focused on phonics and storytelling with The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Year 1 developed literacy through phonics, high-frequency words, and parts of speech, while Year 2 enhanced writing with noun phrases and compound sentences. Year 3 explored persuasive writing through texts like. Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems. Year 4 combined creativity and technology by animating narratives inspired by The Twits. Year 5 delved into various genres to improve storytelling, and Year 6 analysed Bindi by Kirli Saunders to deepen their understanding of Indigenous literature.



Secondary school teachers have engaged students in diverse English learning experiences, enhancing analytical and presentation skills. Year 7 students developed life skills through speech preparation, arriving early to class with enthusiasm. Year 8 students analysed advertisements to understand persuasive techniques, improving writing and vocabulary. Year 9 students prepared TED Talks to inspire change, mastered writing PEARL paragraphs, and explored tragic characters in Of Mice and Men, focusing on themes of dreams and isolation. Senior students investigated media representation of issues and delivered speeches on misrepresented topics, participating in energetic debates on current societal issues.

 

 

HASS

In Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) this term, lower primary students explored personal and geographical studies, examining family origins and structures. Year 2 students focused on geographical representations of places and interconnectedness from local to regional levels. Year 3 delved into Australian celebrations and commemorations, learning about the nation's cultural traditions. Year 4 studied Australia’s colonial past, focusing on the First Fleet and Indigenous experiences after European arrival. Year 5 explored human impact on the environment, sustainability, and disaster preparedness. Year 6 students studied Australia’s path to Federation, analysing key figures and events that led to the nation's unification.



In the secondary school, Year 7 students completed mini units on Civics and Citizenship, learning about government and society, and Business, focusing on Australia’s economic structure. Year 8 explored the Polynesian region's history, culture, and values. Year 9 studied the Industrial Revolution, analysing population movements and technological advancements. In History we have been learning about Celtic history, culture and society - religion, politics, weapons and military. The girls chose one of these aspects of Celtic society to investigate through an independent source investigation research assignment. Year 11 Legal explored the Australian legal system, criminal investigations, and youth crime, including the Making Queensland Safer Act. Year 12 Legal researched law reform, focusing on domestic violence, assault, and animal welfare. Year 11 Business focused on seed and start-up business stages, while Year 12 Business covered expansion into Asian markets. 11Modern History have begun studying The French Revolution, focusing on democracy, enlightenment, and egalitarianism.  12 Modern History are investigating Germany throughout 1914–1945. Both year levels will pick a focus and present their research as an independent source investigation.
