Girls Grammar Represented in both Netball and Football Grand Finals

Interschool Football Grand Final

The girls are excelling in the senior competition, and it's worth noting that a significant portion of our team could still be competing in the junior division. Their outstanding performance throughout the season has earned them a spot in the semi-finals.

On Thursday last week the team played their semi-final against Grammar. With the game being played at Grammar, I’m sure they thought they would have the home ground advantage… until a large crowd of Girls Grammar supporters walked through the gates. Our amazing boarders had their cheer on, and their screams overpowered any attempt the Grammar supporters gave to spur their girls on.

With these two teams having a tight 0-all draw in their round game, our girls knew they had to come out fast and defend strong to get an advantage. After a battling start where both teams struggled to gain an advantage, we positioned ourselves well to force Grammar to make an error and give us a penalty in the goal box, this meant a penalty kick in front of goal. Aylah set up to take the penalty, and after channelling some Sam Kerr-style magic, she made short work of the penalty kick scoring the only goal for the game and handing Girls Grammar a 1-0 win.

The girls then came up against Emmaus in the Grand Final. Emmaus forfeited to us in the round game, but they finished the regular season in first place, so we knew this wasn’t going to be an easy game. A bus full of boarders filled the hill at Emmaus to cheer us on and it was our junior players, Abbey and Edith steering the ship in the absence of our scoring weapon Aylah.

Unfortunately, a more physical Emmaus team won the battle on the day, but our young team can hold their heads high. They played an amazing game and we will be back bigger and better in 2024.

Netball Grand Finals

On Sunday we had a massive Girls Grammar crowd out at Jardine Park to support our Grand Final netball teams and they weren’t disappointed with action packed games.

Saturn took the court at 5.30pm against Runaways Obsidian. The Saturn girls came out strong and had a great lead after the first quarter, but Runaways didn’t finish minor premiers for nothing. They worked hard to have an even second quarter and came back hard in the third to take the lead. The lead was constantly swapping throughout the fourth quarter, with Runaways just getting up by one. The final score was 40-39. Such an amazing effort and our Saturn girls can be really proud of themselves finishing runners up in Junior B2.

Galaxy had an amazing season finishing minor premiers. They won their major semi-final in very convincing fashion and went straight through to the Grand Final where they played the only team to come close on the scoreboard all year, Frenchville Ponies. It was a very close start to the game and Frenchville pushed our girls hard the whole way, particularly in the second quarter where they came within two goals. Galaxy finished strong and were the 2023 Senior A Res2 champions winning 42-34. They were also the only team in the entire Rockhampton Netball Competition to go undefeated through the whole season. Great work girls!
