Girls Grammar Sporting Spotlight

CQ Rugby 7s Carnival

St Brendan’s College was a hive of activity on Saturday 14 October for the annual CQ Rugby 7s Carnival. Twenty five girls headed down to represent Girls Grammar against teams from Bowen, Mackay, Emerald, Gladstone, Yeppoon and Rockhampton.

In an exciting day of competition, the 15 years girls team went through their round games with only one narrow loss, earning a place in the Plate final. Their final was played against TCC and the match finished with a 17-all draw.

The 13s team had a good day developing their skills and working hard for each other. With limited players, the girls fought hard but unfortunately came away without a win in the hot conditions.

The Open Girls played in a combined team with Emerald SHS and went through the competition in dominant fashion. They only had one sub for the whole day but didn’t give an inch to their opposition counterparts. They worked hard as a team and came together well to maintain possession, steal the ball at any opportunity, and crash their way over the try line to have an undefeated day, taking out the 2023 CQ Champions Title.

Bulls 'n' Barrels Volunteers

In return for all their support throughout the year, the QISSN and All Schools Touch teams volunteered their time to assist the P&F with the Bulls 'n' Barrels lolly stall.

The girls had a great time after school on Thursday Week 2 packing lolly cups and making decorations for the stall.

While the firsts teams have finished their state carnivals for the year, we cannot thank the P&F enough for their financial aid in helping our teams travel to Brisbane and Gold Coast this year to compete.

Interhouse Netball Competition

The Secondary Interhouse Netball Competition was played during Week 2 and with a pretty hectic week, some last minute changes were made to the competition format. Instead of playing three round games and a final, this year’s competition was decided using the three round games with the winner being awarded on points.

In round one, there was a draw between Paterson and Smith to start the competition off, and Downs got out to a 6-3 win against Williams. Tuesday’s games saw Downs absolutely wipe the floor with Smith in a comprehensive 20-6 win, with Bethanie getting our only two point goal for the competition. In a tight contest, Paterson narrowly got the job done against Williams 4 goals to 3.

After two tough rounds, Williams and Smith met in a bottom of the table clash where Williams fought hard to secure their only win of the competition and jump ahead of Smith in the final standings.

It then came down to Paterson and Downs in the last round game of the competition, and fittingly enough, the winner of this game would take home the glory as 2023 Interhouse Netball Champions. While Downs were looking strong and yet to be beaten, Paterson meant business and weren’t going down without a fight.

It was a fast and furious start, both teams fought for every ball and capitalised on every opposition mistake. We went into half time drawn on four goals apiece. The second half was all one way traffic as Downs came off the break strong, streaking ahead with 13 unanswered goals to be crowned 2023 Champions.
