Our mathematics students in secondary school have been actively engaged in a range of exciting projects, applying their skills to real-world scenarios. Here’s a look at what’s been happening in each year level:
📊 Year 7 – Averages in Action
Year 7 students have been exploring averages by collecting and analysing data from their peers. They’ve been using mean, median, and mode to make sense of their findings!
🎢 Year 8 – Maths Fun Fair
Year 8 students combined probability, finance, creativity and problem-solving skills in their very own Maths Fun Fair! They designed interactive games based on mathematical concepts, showcasing the fun side of numbers. Tuesday 18 March was a treat for the whole school – realising that Mathematics is fun, engaging and very practical!
🍫 Year 9 – Chocolate Box Design
Using measurement, geometry, and ratios, Year 9 students took on the challenge of designing the perfect chocolate box. They calculated volume and surface area to optimise packaging while making their designs visually appealing.
🌦 Year 10 – Weather Statistics
Year 10 students have been analysing real-world weather data across two locations to determine to understand patterns. Their insights into bivariate data have been impressive!
🚗 Year 11 General Mathematics – Owning and Running a Car
Budgeting, insurance, fuel efficiency, and depreciation—Year 11 General Mathematics students have been applying financial mathematics to understand the costs of car ownership.
🍽 Year 11 Essential Mathematics – Recipe Alterations
Year 11 Essential Maths students have been tweaking and adjusting recipes by scaling ingredients up and down, ensuring the perfect balance of ratios and proportions in cooking.
📷 Year 11 Mathematical Methods – Facial Recognition
Exploring the world of artificial intelligence, Year 11 Mathematical Methods students have been analysing the mathematics behind facial recognition technology and its applications in security and identity verification. Graphical representations of their own image will help them understand the variance with this technology.
🔐 Year 11 Specialist Mathematics – Password Policy
Cybersecurity meets mathematics as Year 11 Specialist Mathematics students investigate the complexity of passwords. They’ve been studying permutations, and probability techniques to understand what makes a strong password.
📊 Year 12 General Mathematics – Bivariate Data and Exam Preparation
After their in-depth investigation into the relationship between two variables using snake lollies last year, our Year 12 General Mathematics students are now shifting their focus to preparing for their Unit 3 exam.
⛷ Year 12 Mathematical Methods – Thredbo Ski Resort Jump
Mathematical Methods students have been exploring the mathematical modeling behind ski jumps, using real-life data from Thredbo Ski Resort to create a new ski jump from numerous functions.
📡 Year 12 Specialist Mathematics – Wireless Signal Analysis & Exam Prep
At the end of last year, Specialist Mathematics students investigated wireless signals and their role in security camera systems around the school. Now, they’re diving into rigorous preparation for their Unit 3 exam.
From statistics to real-world applications, our students continue to see the power of mathematics in everyday life. Well done to all involved!
