As we welcome the month of April and the Easter holidays draw near, it is hard to believe that the final week of Term 1 is upon us. Reflecting on these past nine weeks, I am incredibly proud of our school community and the level of engagement, genuine care, and connection our students and staff have demonstrated. Whether in the classroom, on the sporting field, during cocurricular activities, or simply in their daily interactions, the warmth and support that defines Rockhampton Girls Grammar School has been on full display.
A highlight of the term was our recent Discover Girls Grammar Tour and Afternoon Tea, where we welcomed over 100 guests from 40 families - our largest ever turnout. The interest in our school from early years students, prospective day girls from Years 4-7, and future boarders is a testament to the outstanding reputation of our community. A heartfelt thank you to our Prefects, leadership team, staff, and families who played a role in making our visitors feel so welcome. Seeing our students proudly guide families through our campus and witnessing the genuine enthusiasm of staff as they showcased their classrooms and our beautiful campus was a moment of great pride for me as Principal.
Welcoming New Staff in Term 2
Next term, we are pleased to welcome several new staff members to our school community:
Mrs Stephanie Marston will be joining our Primary Teaching Team teaching Year 2 on Fridays, allowing Mrs Louise Ford to dedicate more time to her role as School Counsellor. Mrs Marston is a familiar face, having previously taught secondary Legal Studies and Business before taking maternity leave.
Mrs Jennifer Broussard will join the Prep team from Week 3 for the remainder of the year while Ms Natalie Spence commences her maternity leave. Mrs Broussard has already made a positive impact in our primary school through her relief teaching roles since 2024.
Mrs Lorina Brunton takes on the role of Indigenous Liaison Officer, a position we are thrilled to reinstate in 2025. After a year without funding for this vital role, we are delighted to once again offer this dedicated support to our Indigenous students.
A Strong Partnership Between School and Home
I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to our parents and caregivers for the positive partnership we share between school and home. The respect, understanding, and trust you place in our staff and the work they do ensures that our students receive the very best education, care, and support. This culture of community and positivity is what makes Girls Grammar so special.
Looking Ahead to Term 2
We anticipate a big and exciting Term 2, commencing with boarders and staff returning on Tuesday, 22 April, and classes resuming on Wednesday, 23 April. While it is a short first week, students are expected to return fully prepared to engage in learning from Day 1.
A key event early in the term is our ANZAC Day commemorations on Friday, 25 April. It is always a proud moment to see our students marching with pride, beginning with our Year 12 students attending the Dawn Service in their yellow berets, followed by the Rats of Tobruk service with our Prefects. This year, we are especially honoured to have received official confirmation from the Rockhampton Regional Council that our Year 12 candlelight vigil at the Cenotaph will once again be led by Rockhampton Girls Grammar School - an esteemed tradition we hold close to our hearts.
Shortly after, on Wednesday, 30 April, we celebrate Foundation Day, marking 133 years of Girls Grammar. Students and staff can look forward to our iconic Gold Coin Spiral, with all proceeds going towards the continued restoration and refurbishment of Paterson House. We encourage all students to start saving their gold coins over the holidays! The celebrations will continue with an Old Girls Panel for students in Years 5-12, where past students will share their experiences and insights. We look forward to welcoming our Old Girls and Alumni back for this special occasion.
As we wrap up Term 1, I wish all our students, staff, and families a restful and enjoyable break. Thank you for your contributions to making this term such a wonderful start to the school year. I look forward to seeing you all refreshed and ready for another exciting term ahead.
