Reflecting on Four Decades: A Journey from Year 8 to Deputy Principal - Highlights, Wellbeing, and Upcoming Events

Forty years ago I began my Girls Grammar journey as a studious Year 8 student. The time in between then and now has flown by, and it is hard to believe that we are already half way through Term 1. Highlights have included the Investiture, Valentine’s Day activities and the Swimming Carnival.

Wellbeing happens when students feel safe, supported and connected to their school community. When the environment promotes social, emotional and academic balance, students can thrive and reach their potential. At the beginning of a school year, students are often forging new friendships and testing old ones. I highly recommend Rebecca Sparrow’s '6 Friendship Lessons For Girls', for parents/caregivers navigating this space. https://rebeccasparrow.com/

Queensland Police Service:

Many thanks to Senior Sergeant Katrina for delivering important messages around cyber-safety and responsible online behaviours, to the Year 5 and 6 students.

Aila R

It was so fun learning about all the things that happen when you're a police officer, but my favourite/interesting thing that we learnt about is how important it is to not cyber bully and that the police can get involved.

Zoey W

If people are being mean you must leave the group straight away.

Indee S

I learned to not trust everyone you meet online

Calani J

I learnt that police officers can find all the information that has been deleted and hidden.

Charlotte H

During this lesson I learnt that there are all different units of police such as mounted police, forensic crash and many others.

Tiffany W

In this lesson I learnt whatever app you go on when you search, take a video, take a photo or message, you're leaving a footprint and a trail of what apps you've been on.

April M

I learnt that some people can disguise themselves as kids your age by using AI technology to trick you.

Harper B

I learnt that the police can be involved and you could be sent to prison for prank calling the police station.

Year 7 Camp:

Year 7 students reflect on their experience at the Capricorn Caves camp:

Year 7 camp was probably one of the best camps I have ever been on. All the activities were definitely fun to do and I loved spending all that time with my peers and teachers. The cabins were all great and some of the food was good as well. The astronomy was the best and it was very educational but in a fun way. You can learn a lot of new things doing it.

Earlier this week, the Year 7 cohort went on a camp to the Capricorn Caves! It was so much fun and we did so many cool things. We went fossil hunting and found some really interesting fossils. We went adventure caving. It was a bit scary at first, but it was exciting crawling through the caves and getting over our fear. We also went on a tour inside the caves. There is one huge cave called the Cathedral. People have weddings in there. There were rows of seats and a place for a choir to sing. When we were sitting down, a tiny bat flew over our heads. Then the guide turned out all the lights and it was totally black. We had to use maps to find clues and solve a word puzzle in orienteering. It was a great way to work together and help each other out. The rock-climbing wall was another highlight. A lot of girls made it to the top, but it was hard, so not everyone made it. The crate stacking activity only worked when everyone in the group helped each other and worked as a team. A big thank you to the team at Capricorn Caves and our teachers for making this camp so special.

To the Year 6 students - You will definitely like the caves experience next year because it is really fun. Some things might be a little out of your comfort zone, but trust me, there will be something there that you will love.

PPEP Talk:

In honour of International Women's Day next week, we are pleased to announce that on Tuesday, 4 March, the Pelvic Pain Foundation will be presenting to our Year 10, 11, and 12 students. This session aims to educate and raise awareness about the National Action Plan for Endometriosis. The session will inform students to recognise and identify when symptoms are normal and abnormal, strategies for pain management and where to go for further help. PPEP offers a FREE online follow-up session for any student who identifies a complex pain concern or would like their parent/caregiver to know more. Students have the opportunity to ask questions to PPEP Gynaecologist and Pain Specialist, Associate Professor Susan Evans. Students/Parents/Caregivers can register for upcoming follow-up sessions here (https://www.pelvicpain.org.au/ppep-talk-schools-program/ppep-talk-next-steps/).
