Reflecting on National Boarding Week - Deputy Principal Students' Personal Experience

Ms Cobon and her family, after her Year 12 graduation ceremony.

As we celebrate National Boarding Week at Girls Grammar, I find myself reminiscing about my own days at a boarding school all those years ago. Attending a boarding school shaped me in ways I only came to appreciate fully as an adult. Three key aspects made it an exceptional journey for a young woman: lifelong friendships, independence, and a supportive learning environment.

Firstly, the friendships forged at a boarding school are unparalleled. Living at school, sharing experiences, and navigating the highs and lows of adolescence, created bonds that have stood the test of time. As a school community we supported each other through exams, homesickness, and personal challenges, creating a sisterhood that extended beyond the classroom. These friendships were built on trust and mutual respect.

Secondly, attending a boarding school instilled a sense of independence that has been invaluable throughout my life. I learned to manage my time, balance academics with extracurricular activities, and take responsibility for my actions. This independence was empowering, fostering a sense of self-reliance and confidence. It prepared me for the challenges of university and beyond, giving me the skills to navigate life’s complexities with resilience and poise.

Lastly, the supportive learning environment at a boarding school was crucial. We had access to dedicated teachers and were available for extra help and guidance. The structured routine ensured that we had ample time for study and revision, while also encouraging participation in sports, arts, and community service. This holistic approach to education nurtured not only our intellectual growth but also our personal development, teaching us the importance of balance and well-roundedness.

As we honour National Boarding Week, I reflect on these foundational aspects of my own schooling experience with gratitude. They shaped the woman I am today, and I see these same qualities being fostered in the students at Girls Grammar.

To all our past and current boarders, and day students, know that you are part of a proud tradition, one that equips you with lifelong skills and memories. Happy National Boarding Week!
