Term 3 Kicks Off with Vibrant NAIDOC Celebrations at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School

Boarding welcomed Term 3 with vibrant NAIDOC celebrations alongside our Indigenous families. Sixteen of our Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal girls proudly shared their culture, showcasing the achievements of our young First Nations students.

Both groups performed traditional dances at assembly, and after school over 30 family members joined for additional dancing, with most boarders participating. It was heartening to see our Indigenous girls so proud to share their heritage.

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families embody the 2024 NAIDOC theme, 'Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud, and Proud.' This was evident in our performers, who have grown up strong in culture and knowledge. Their families have chosen to 'keep the fire burning' by passing down their traditions, which the girls shared with us at assembly and our gathering afterward.

This year's theme inspires our First Nations girls to honour their ancestors' resilience and acknowledge their struggles. Their actions have enabled Indigenous people today to maintain influential platforms to advocate for their communities. Moving forward, may our girls be strong in mind, body, and spirit, continuing to 'Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud, and Proud.'

The day concluded with over 130 girls and families sharing a traditional meal blessed by our families, making for a wonderful evening. This Saturday, we will join St Brendan’s College for more NAIDOC activities.

Additionally, we welcomed two new boarders and a new boarding supervisor this term.

Sport has commenced, including a rowing regatta on Saturday. Upcoming events include school camps, subject selection evenings, and our school musical.

There’s much to look forward to in Term 3. Have a wonderful weekend!
