We are reaching out to reinforce the importance of following road safety rules during drop-off and pick-up times. Recently, a devastating incident at Auburn South Primary School in Hawthorn East took the life of 11-year-old Jack Davey. Jack was struck by a car during a u-turn in a restricted area on Tooronga Rd, underscoring the need for extra caution in school zones. Our hearts go out to Jack’s family, friends, and the Auburn South community as they navigate this painful time.
This tragic accident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of safe driving in school areas, particularly around busy drop-off and pick-up zones like ours. It has come to our attention that some parents and caregivers have been observed making illegal u-turns near our Agnes Street drop-off and pick-up zone. These u-turns, while perhaps convenient, can quickly turn dangerous and jeopardise the safety of students, staff, and other road users.
At Rockhampton Girls Grammar School, the well-being of our students is our highest priority, and we must all work together to maintain a safe environment. To that end, we ask all families to exercise patience and follow these guidelines:
Avoid illegal u-turns in and around the school zone. These manoeuvres are not only against the law but also significantly increase the risk of accidents.
Use designated drop-off and pick-up zones only. Pull into the curb fully and wait for students to exit or enter your vehicle in a safe, orderly manner.
Allow extra time for drop-off and pick-up routines to avoid feeling rushed. Being in a hurry often leads to unsafe driving decisions.
Stay vigilant and look out for children, who may be less visible and more vulnerable in busy traffic environments.
We ask each of you to consider how your actions impact the safety of our community. Let’s learn from this recent tragedy and commit to protecting the well-being of every child and family in our school. Working together, we can foster a safe and supportive environment for everyone at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter and for your continued support in prioritising safety.
