At Rockhampton Girls Grammar School, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) is an essential part of our curriculum, helping students understand the world and their place within it. As outlined in the Australian Curriculum, HASS investigates human behaviour and interaction in various contexts - social, cultural, environmental, economic, and political. It has a historical and contemporary focus, examining local and global issues while considering the challenges of the future.
HASS empowers students to become active and informed citizens. Through studying this learning area, they develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, while also exploring personal and social perspectives. By engaging with diverse topics, students learn to analyse how historical, geographical, legal, and economic factors interconnect, preparing them for a rapidly changing world.
This semester, students explored a range of fascinating topics such as:
The evolution of technology, transport, and communication, and how these advancements have shaped daily life.
The significance of ancient civilisations, including the histories of Australia’s First Nations Peoples and their enduring legacies.
The relationship between people and landscapes, examining how different cultures interact with the environment and respond to natural hazards.
The impact of historical events, such as global conflicts, on the development of national identities and shared values.
The fight for civil and human rights, with a focus on movements that have shaped modern societies and the ongoing struggle for equality and justice.
These studies not only expand students’ knowledge of the world but also foster empathy, resilience, and a deeper understanding of global and local challenges. HASS inspires students to think critically about the past, engage thoughtfully with the present, and contribute meaningfully to the future.
