Year 11 Leadership Camp: A Message from Girls Grammar Deputy Principal - Students

I am writing this week’s newsletter article as I sit in the Lodge at the Capricorn Caves with our Year 11 students on their final camp. It was a great first day and truly set the scene for an exuberant few days. From the excited and anticipatory bus trip to the Cathedral Cave tour last night, it was evident the girls enjoyed each experience.

The Year 11 Leadership Camp is intended to assist the girls with preparing for their role as Seniors and role models within the School next year as well as clarifying their aspirations for more formal leadership positions. They are encouraged to develop their own understanding of what it means to be a leader and reflect on their own strengths and areas for growth in this area.

Mrs Krehlik started the learning aspect of our first day with a presentation on traits of great leaders. Characteristics such as supportive, respectful, openminded, encouraging, honest, determined, considerate and authentic were some of the most popular suggestions made by the girls. Over the coming days they will identify the traits most valued by them and contemplate the extent to which they embody these.

This morning (Thursday) we divided the girls into three groups who will rotate through adventure caving, orienteering and a high ropes challenge over the next two days. Some girls will face their fear of heights whilst others will challenge themselves navigating through small spaces. The girls are encouraged to attempt all activities and we have spoken about the feeling you get when you are able to overcome your fears and succeed at something you didn’t believe you could.

Dr Fry will also be attending to engage the girls in some fun problem-solving activities requiring effective teamwork – one of our most popular sessions last year.

It has been wonderful to observe such a positive, supportive and cohesive cohort of girls and I am keen to observe the continuing development of their concept of leadership over the next two days.
