Year 9 Camp Champion Adventure: Building Skills and Team Spirit at Boyne Island

Last week, our Year 9 cohort attended the Boyne Island Environmental Education Centre to participate in the Camp Champion program. This program operates on the belief that everyone has the potential to be a champion within themselves, encouraging students to take action and embark on a journey to become the best versions of themselves.

Throughout the week, the Year 9 students engaged in a journey of self-reflection and self-esteem building by metaphorically driving their own 'train' and collecting 'carriages' of personal life skills along the way. From the outset, the students were eager to discover new things and face the challenges ahead, pushing their personal boundaries and stepping out of their comfort zones.

Our activities included canoeing, bush cooking, high ropes challenges, team problem-solving, shelter building, and spending time learning about each other's strengths and weaknesses.

Some highlights, according to the students, included:

  • 'I learned how to make damper and loved canoeing.'

  • 'Some of us got up at 3.00am on Friday morning to watch the Matildas play in the Olympics; we were sad they lost.'

  • 'I really enjoyed the high ropes and canoeing. When the canoe flipped, I went for a nice swim.'

  • 'I enjoyed camp because the activities were fun, and I learned skills such as leadership, resilience, and understanding my own and others' strengths and weaknesses.'

Overall, the camp was a tremendous success, with students gaining valuable life skills and creating lasting memories.
